Lou Reed, video still
Lou Reed and Metallica chose Darren Aronofsky for the video for ‘The View’ from their controversial joint venture ‘Lulu’. Aronofsky brought along his cameraman, Matthew Libatique, who has worked on all of Aronofsky’s feature releases — which include ‘Black Swan’ and ‘The Wrestler’ — and has also worked with Spike Lee on several films.
Aronofsky about the video and the Lou Reed – Metallica collabo:
“The first time I heard ‘The View’, I was stunned, I had never heard anything like it. Half was all Lou. The other half all Metallica. It was a marriage that on the surface made no sense, but the fusion changed the way I thought about both artists and morphed into something completely fresh and new.
“I couldn’t stop listening to it. Lou’s crushing lyrics, and the band’s incredible licks. It’s so original and that’s why I wanted to work on it.”
… we’re not as excited about ‘Lulu’ as Aronofsky, but it is underappreciated.
In 2012 Metallica will play their ‘Black ALbum’ in full at Download, Rock Am Ring/Rock Im Park in Germany and Nova Rock in Austria. They have also announced dates in Paris, Oslo and Horsens where they’ll play at a former prison.
